Golf Handicaps – an overview
The USGA (United States Golf Association) introduced a handicap system in the early 20th Century.
The purpose of the system is to always try the playing field for golfers with different skills levels, so that the golfers compete equally. For example imagine someone whose average score is 92 trying to compete against someone whose average score is 72nd Without a handicap system, it can not be done. At least not fair.
With a handicap system, the weaker player strokes on certain holes is given on the course. That is, permitted on a particular hole of the weaker games to be "a stroke" – deduct one stroke – from his score for the hole. At the end of the round, the two players with different skills can their "net score" figure – the gross value minus The Strokes, they were allowed to take on certain holes.
The USGA Handicap System received a great sophistication in the early 1980s with the introduction of the slope rating for a golf course, joining the long- Course Rating as methods of assessing the difficulty of a course.
Course rating is the number of strokes a certain set of tees are expected in the upper Half of the scratch golfer to play. A USGA course rating of 74.8 means that 74.8 is expected to be the average score of the top 50 percent of the rounds from Scratch Golfer won.
Slope rating is a number that the relative difficulty of a course for bogey golfers compared to course rating. Slope can range from 55 to 155, with 113 considered a course of average difficulty.
Par is irrelevant in the calculation of handicaps. Only adjusted gross score, course rating and slope rating are into play. Adjusted gross score is a golfer's total strokes after taking into account the maximum per-hole Equitable Stroke Control totals under allowed.
One player, the official USGA Handicap Index is from a complicated formula (which, fortunately, to players themselves have not shown), which takes into account adjusted Gross score, course rating and slope rating derived. (An explanation of the formula appears in our Golf Handicap FAQ.)
