My 91 "went great VW Golf GTI 1.8l, I stopped at a red traffic light turned green and when it is going backwards ….

I went to start and it didn't want to move. I stepped on the gas and it backfired and started more rpms. I left them there, and when I came back when it ran off very cool again until it warmed up, did the same, then again wouldnt start. I came back the next day and it still wouldnt start. I pumped the gas one few times, it started horribly and ran for about 20 or 30 seconds dead, and wont start again. i dont know what happened. it ran all day long, large and then this happens. Ideas about what might have happened? PLEASE HELP! I was told it could be the fuel pump, fuel filter, or perhaps even time jumped. i really dont know where to start. any help would be very grateful.

Yes … I would suspect the pump !!… I have this similar problem on my VW … as a rather "Budget was" pump to pump to replace a VW 1995 as compared to
